Flying in West Macedonia, Greece
Our location in West Macedonia, Greece, offers fantastic flying opportunities with unexplored mountains. With four easily accessible takeoffs, mountains up to 2400 meters, flatlands, and excellent thermals, you can enjoy some incredible days of flying. Whether you want to cruise or take long flights, this area will both attract and challenge you.
You typically need to drive 20 to 40 minutes to reach the takeoff points. Fortunately, the locations are easily accessible by car. There are five main takeoff points to choose from, depending on the wind and weather conditions:
- Galatini: (SW, S, W): This is our main takeoff, known for good thermals, offering opportunities for flights up to 100 kilometers or easy thermalling sessions,enjoying the views because the area features a beautiful mix of mountains and flatlands.
- The Wind Turbines: (N, NE, E)Right behind the Galatini takeoff. Suitable for North wind conditions. It is higher than Galatini with a big grassy starting place which offers easy thermalling or dynamic soaring sessions.
- Nymfeo: (E, SE, S, SW) This site is a beautiful nature resort which offers stunning lake views and opportunities for small cross-country flights.
- Zervi: (E, SE, S) The oldest and biggest takeoff in Greece with a range of high mountains, lakes, and flatlands, famous for its big flight opportunities to Olympus, Meteora, and even the Albanian borders.
We also have for you a few more takeoff options for soaring and thermalling as alternative fun.
In summer, Galatini is also suitable for acro flying, as you can easily thermal back up. The thermals can be strong, typically ranging from 3 to 5 meters per second, occasionally reaching 6 to 7 meters per second. Crossing valleys or flatlands can be technically challenging but achievable. Cloud bases can range from 2,000 to almost 4,000 meters on certain days.
The best months for flying are from June to the end of October. March and April are also possible but do not guarantee daily thermals.

Requirements
Our trips in West Macedonia are not suitable for complete beginners. Please ensure you have your paragliding license for a minimum of 2 years and have some experience flying in stronger conditions. If you are a paragliding school, we can still provide transportation, accommodation, and briefings for your group.
